Many diesel owners have an aftermarket differential cover. Some advertise more fluid capacity, some look prettier than others, you get the point. So why would you need a Banks Power Diff Cover for your Powerstroke, Cummins, or Duramax if you've never had issues with your stock one or you have already upgraded to a different aftermarket cover?
The Problem with "Flat-Back" Covers
Think about it, every single fluid in your truck has some sort of cooling system on it. Oil has multiple types of coolers for it. The coolant system is obvious. Many diesel trucks have trans fluid coolers. What cools down the diff fluid? The answer: the diff has no way of cooling its fluid down, especially in our Arizona heat. Many aftermarket brands have a “flat-back” version that holds more fluid. The problem with this design is fluid dynamics. Fluids need to flow smoothly to transfer more energy. A flat back has jagged edges and doesn't allow the fluid to flow freely, doing the opposite of cooling and breaking down the fluid more quickly. You might have 8qt of fluid in your aftermarket flat back design, but what does that matter if the fluid does not flow, and still doesn't have a dedicated cooling system?
The Banks Ram-Air Solution
Banks is the only one that has a solution to differential cooling. Unlike the “flat-backs”, banks follows the same design of the stock diff cover, but adds directional fluid guides to force fluid to flow around the gears and even to the front pinion gear and out to the axles, getting fluid to all components. On top of this, Banks makes the only cover that has a dedicated patented cooling system. Banks have big scoops that come out of the bottom corners of the cover flush with the bottom of the axle that grabs cool under-truck air and blasts it up the back of the diff cover using heat transferring fins. It works so well that it only uses 4qts of fluid and cools the diff 61 degrees better than stock. That's about 30 degrees better than the pretty aftermarket “flat-back” covers with 8 qts of fluid, essentially saving you money on every diff fluid change. The results don't lie. Don't get me wrong, the Banks covers are also pretty. The more important part is that it works, and works well.
