If you’re driving a 2001 to 2026 GM Duramax, there is a hidden danger lurking at the front of your engine. It doesn’t matter if you have a classic LB7 or a brand-new L5P; your harmonic balancer could be the reason your engine fails catastrophically.

At Power Forge Diesel in Yuma, Arizona, we specialize in preventing "The Snap." Here is everything you need to know about the Duramax crankshaft pin shear issue and how we can fix it in a single day.

The Problem: A Design Flaw in the Duramax Crankshaft

From the factory, the Duramax harmonic balancer is held in place by bolt tension, small pins, or a combination of both.

The issue? This design is prone to failure. Under high torque or heavy workloads, the harmonic balancer can actually spin on the crankshaft. When it loses its seat, the engine loses its balance. This causes extreme vibration that often leads to the crankshaft snapping in half—resulting in a total engine loss.

The Traditional "Fix" (Expensive & Slow)

Many diesel owners believe that the only way to "key" a crankshaft is to:

  1. Pull the entire engine.

  2. Tear it down to the bare block.

  3. Send the crankshaft to a machine shop for a keyway.

For most of us, spending $5,000+ and losing our truck for weeks just isn't an option.

The Power Forge Diesel Solution: The "Pin Kit"

We offer a high-strength, cost-effective solution right here in Yuma. We use a specialized Crankshaft Pin Kit that allows us to secure your balancer without pulling the engine.

Why our Pin Kit is the better choice:

  • Dual-Point Grip: We install a precision pin 180° from the factory pins, creating two points of contact that act exactly like a machined keyway.

  • Same-Day Service: Once your parts are in, we can typically perform the install in just one day.

  • ARP Bolt and Washer: We reinstall with ARP hardware for more reliability

  • Affordability: You get the same protection as a machined keyway for a fraction of the cost.

  • Prevention: You avoid the "catastrophic failure" bill that comes with a snapped crank.

Protect Your Truck at Power Forge Diesel

Don't wait until you hear a strange vibration or your truck leaves you stranded on the I-95. Whether you use your Duramax for heavy towing or high-performance street use, pinning your crank is the single best insurance policy you can buy for your engine.
